The Hilly 2017 returned on 16 September for the third and biggest event so far with well over 100 children competing in the Mini Hilly 1k and 2.5k races, and more than 80 adults running in the 10k. £900 was raised for Hambledon Primary School.
This year, the Hilly awarded more trophies by age category and this included a new trophy in the 60+ category donated by Bella Birdwood in memory of her wonderful husband 'Fluffy' (Gordon), who completed the race in 2016. It was a privilege to have Bella and her daughters attending the event and presenting the trophy to Michael Stares, from Gosport Road Runners.

The Mini Hilly was an especially wonderful sight with so many children running around the challenging course up on Speltham Down where John Fox-Robinson donned his usual pink tutu as the designated race pacemaker. The 1k race was won by Rosanna Fox-Robinson with Charlie Rowland the leading boy. In the 2.5k race, an absolutely brutal route on Speltham Down, Elliot Lewis from Kingscourt School romped to victory.

In the 10k race for those aged 15 and over, we had course records for both men and women runners. Julian Manning defended his crown again in 37:45, carving out an even greater gap between him and the rest of the field. Matthew Houlberg, 15, achieved yet another stunning second place in 41:02. In the women's 10k race, we had an impressive new winner in Polly Keen, who destroyed the previous course record with a time of 41:10 and was third in the entire field.
The Friends of Hambledon laid on the fabulous post-race merriments at the Village Hall race HQ. We are hugely grateful to Kate Magee and the rest of the team for making this event such a massive success.

Moreover, a big thank you to the many volunteers and race marshalls that gave up their time to help the Hilly run so smoothly. We did though manage to make one mistake in not registering Evie Tester as the leading girl in the under 10s 2.5k race. Evie has subsequently been presented with a trophy, but we are sorry that she didn't receive it on the day and bask in the glory that she so richly deserved.
A final thanks to our anchor sponsor Eric Robinson Solicitors and Patrick Hunter for handing out the trophies. Thanks also to Rhian from Rebalance Pilates for doing the race warm-ups and after race massages, to Hartridges for the soft drinks and Hambledon Vineyard for being part of the 10k race route.
